Cobalt Ore–I really don’t have much of a memory with farming this back in the day.

I’m pretty sure it was more of a hassle than any of the other Northrend ore–and I didn’t have a second profession that Cobalt could help boost me in–which means I would’ve stuck with leveling Mining via Saronite Ore instead.

In any case, now days I find myself mining this ore in Howling Fjord due to the zone’s beautiful background music, and the peaceful scenery.

FAQ

What are your PC specs?

What addons are used for farming Cobalt Ore in WoW?

What professions benefit from Mining?

  • Jewelcrafting
  • Mining

First off, Mining, because you can’t exactly mine without said profession to begin with. Though you can still possibly acquire ore through other means–such as treasures and chests you pick up while fishing.

Mining, of course, also allows you to smelt the ore you have into bars–beneficial in other crafting professions.

Jewelcrafting allows you to break down stacks of five Cobalt Ore into gems.

What Mining routes aren’t mentioned?

Dismissed zones

  • Dragonblight
The nodes weren’t exactly close enough for the entire route to net me enough Cobalt in my travels. Thus, it’s been excluded.
  • Grizzly Hills
You’re not going to get a lot of ore just by skimming the zone with a route. They’re too few and far between for it to be worth your time and effort. Instead, it’s best to combine a route that has both mining nodes and herbs–my stats for this is located in my In-Depth Farming Guide.

What else can you get from farming Cobalt Ore?

You have a chance of gathering Crystallized Earth, Crystallized Water, and WotLK gems.

Maps, Routes, and Data

Reduced resolution
The routes in this section offer you full view of the maps in question, at a reduced resolution of 1280×720. In order to get the full resolution of 2560×1440, you’ll need to purchase my In-Depth Farming Guide. It offers a variety of routes for several zones, with all the data I’ve accumulated over the years of farming, including my Routes addon information for you to use in-game.

  • My farmer is a Horde druid, thus giving faster in-and-out flight form.
  • Mining skill isn’t high enough? Then you’ll gather Cobalt Ore Nugget.
  • Overall farming time per zone: 30 minutes.

Northrend

There are four different zones where you can farm this ore in the Northrend continent, however, only three of these zones are good for a mining route alone. Grizzly Hills, as mentioned in the dismissed zones, has too few mining nodes that are few and far between for it to justify even trying

Borean Tundra

Cobalt Ore and the Best Routes for Farming

This is more of a relaxing route to take in order to accumulate some Cobalt Ore. Mainly because you’re really not going to get a lot of the stuff, and while you’ll typically have no competition, I can’t believe there was someone else farming ore in the area while I was doing the same one day.

  • Cobalt Ore – 97

This zone has been mined to completion in my In-Depth Farming Guide, meaning you can now see how long it took me to get 1000 Cobalt and more from this route alone.

Howling Fjord

Cobalt Ore and the Best Routes for Farming

I love the background music in this zone while I’m farming. But one of its flaws (the zone, not the music), are the mountains. You can be flying from one are to the next without any ore in sight. However, that doesn’t mean the zone doesn’t offer ore in various clusters.

  • Cobalt Ore – 176

This zone has been mined to completion in my In-Depth Farming Guide, meaning you can now see how long it took me to get 1000 Cobalt and more from this route alone.

Zul’drak

Cobalt Ore and the Best Routes for Farming

While this zone has the ore bunched closer together, I wasn’t able to get as much Cobalt as I would’ve liked. Keep in mind though, due to the simple nature of the zone and how close these nodes are, you’re liable to have competition.

  • Cobalt Ore – 146

This zone has been mined to completion in my In-Depth Farming Guide, meaning you can now see how long it took me to get 1000 Cobalt and more from this route alone.

Professions

If you’re curious as to how much gold you can possibly gain from the items listed below, you can always check out The Undermine Journal, choose your region, and then your realm. After that, search for the items below and see what they’ve been selling for lately.

Jewelcrafting

This ore isn’t as well found in the world as Saronite is, so I would suggest holding off on prospecting it, unless you have a lot of them and nothing else to do with your stacks. While there are several zones that do grant you a lot, it’s all a slight bit less than your average gathering of Saronite.

Mining

Cobalt Bar (via Cobalt Bar)
Used by Blacksmithing, Engineering.
A bit more on the simplistic side of crafting, as you’ve only got two crafting professions that use it. Plus, if you need an extra boost in either mining or skinning, an engineer can always craft Pickaxe.
