Dark Iron Ore was never been mined by me when it first came to be and for a long while after. Actually, I didn’t even think of mining it until I started making these farming guides. Don’t get me wrong, I knew of its existence, I just never sought it out.

One, because I didn’t have any professions that would even benefit from the bars the ore turns into (though I could’ve easily sold it on the AH). Two, I’ve never been into raiding. Not even to farm them, honestly. I’ve always stuck with normal dungeons to grab loot, and even through the dungeons, I’d never stopped to herb or mine.

Not to mention, in order to smelt the ore, you have to do it in the Blackrock Depths, and that always seemed like such a hassle to me.

So here’s to farming an old-school raid.

As far as this ore specifically, it’s simple Mining. You can’t prospect it into any gems, so the only things it’s capable of is being smelted into bars. At that point, it’d be beneficial to other professions though.

What Mining/Herbalism routes aren’t mentioned?

The zone mentioned below is another instance area, but I didn’t bother going through it to accumulate the amount of ore in one run. I know, I know, what a jerk…

Dismissed Zones

  • Blackrock Depths
    This is a large dungeon to go through and because of that, I decided to skip out on seeing how much ore you can gather in one run. It wouldn’t be worth it just for mining, seeing as Molten Core is smaller.

What else can you get from farming Dark Iron Ore?

You have a chance of gathering Black Diamond, Black Vitriol, and Blood of the Mountain.

Maps, Routes, and Data

Reduced resolution
The routes in this section offer you full view of the maps in question, at a reduced resolution of 1280×720. Eastern Kingdoms

Molten Core

I don’t have a visual for the raid, since it’s a raid, and if you have to addons mentioned, you’ll see where the possible nodes are at.

As long as you don’t kill any bosses, you’ll be able to reset the raid and keep farming for the ore. The layout is pretty easy, some twists and turns, and there are times when mobs are dense, but not often. Just sneak around them if you can. Your best bet are stealth classes if you’re lower level. But aside from that, things should be fine for you.

Dark Iron Bar
Used by Jewelcrafting, Blacksmithing, Engineering.
You can only smelt in Blackrock Depths. Aside from that, this bar is used in a whole lot of crafting by Engineers and Blacksmithers.
