Yono and the Celestial Elephants, wait…we’re an elephant?

Everything about this game screams cute, and that’s no joke. It’s an extremely cute game to play and certainly caters to those who enjoy playing something they enjoy looking at. Without the realism of other games.

But while it’s aesthetically pleasing to look at and makes your inner girly self say, “aww”, it doesn’t offer much more.

Gameplay

The gameplay is a bit on the stiff side. It’s certainly where the game falters, where everything else is concerned.

The controls are odd. You don’t exactly go up, down, left, and right. Instead, when you go one direction, your character is actually moving sideways in said direction. So it takes some getting used to. Because of this, it’s sometimes difficulty to walk to a certain area without accidentally falling or something.

I mean, you don’t really die, but still. It causes frustration.

There’s also no clear-cut storyline. You’re an elephant which is obviously a rarity in this place we’re traveling in, but…why are we here and what exactly is our purpose? It’s not laid out in full and it makes me wonder if it only all really comes together further into the game.

For kids, this isn’t much of an issue, but for the older generation, it’s something we’re going to catch onto.

Aside from that, this is also a puzzle game, and they aren’t too difficult to think your way through them. It’s a family friendly game, so it couldn’t be too mind-boggling, you know? Due to focusing more on the puzzles, that means the actual battle portions of the game are a little more few and far between.

Graphics

I love looking at Yono and its graphics. They’re reminiscent of Link’s Awakening and World of Final Fantasy. Nothing can beat playing a chibi character, after all. Thinking about it a bit more, it’s kind of like looking at Play-Doh. I’m sure that’s an odd reference to make, but the graphics just look pliable and things move when you go through them. Such as fields of flowers.

I don’t know, it’s a pleasing touch.

Navigation

Like I said in the gameplay portion, I don’t like the navigation in Yono. I just don’t see the point of having the movements go at angles. Some people might get used to this fairly easily, but for everyone else…our eyes might be twitching while we try to traverse certain areas.

Now, it’s a pretty straightforward game in where you have to go, but you can do a little bit of exploring in certain areas.

There’s also fast-travel as you continue through different regions.

Soundtrack

One of the main aspects of Yono and the Celestial Elephants is its soundtrack. They did an amazing job with the music, and if you liked it yourself, you can even purchase them from Amazon in the link section below.

Beside the actual soundtrack, the little notes that are made when you interact with the environment add to the adorableness.
