Theatre of the Absurd, almost as absurd as the title.
There’s something fun (and not quite fun) to go back in time and kind of search for games that don’t have very many reviews on them. I think Theatre of the Absurd had a little over 100 reviews and was pegged as “very positive.”
I’m, uh, here to tell you the positive statement is a bit of a stretch.

Who is this game for?
Explanation to Negative Feedback
Bad voice acting
Sometimes you just can’t take characters seriously when they have no emotional range and sound like Siri giving you directions on where to go and what to do.
Expert mode hand-holding
Man, if the MC constantly speaks out loud on what to do next, and large text appears on the screen telling you what to do next in expert mode, then I’d hate to play the easier mode. Like, I get a puzzle won’t be complete until all the pieces fit. Why do I have to be told that?
And going back to certain scenes will make the MC repeat the same freaking thing, over and over.
It’s expert mode. Stop holding my hand.
Hidden object scenes are rough
I’m not saying that the scenes are bad, but if you’re someone that’s prone to headaches and such, there’s usually a darker background and a piercing light that’ll hurt your eyes somewhere in the midst of it all. Not to mention that some of the objects fit a little too well into the background.
Meant for smaller monitors
For those of you with a larger monitor, the game doesn’t scale that great.
Poorly done ending
Honestly…I couldn’t wrap my head around the ending. It just wasn’t clear on who we were and what the hell exactly happened in the aftermath.

Unique puzzles
After going through enough of these hidden object games, you’ll start to notice a trend with a lot of the puzzles in them. I can say that one of the interesting puzzles in this game are the scenes where you find different parts that fit a location of the picture shown.
I’ve yet to see them before this game, but the other puzzles seem a little typical for the average HOG.

Plot
Scarlett Frost, specialist in the dark arts has been summoned to a luxurious and remote theatre in the snowy Italian Alps. Could it be that the infamous and diabolical Hapsburg Cube has been found and purchased by the sinister theatre proprietor, Dr. Corvis ? The cube is said to imprison a powerful and ancient Babylonian demon that would wreak hellish destruction if the cubes should break.
In a moment of desperate confusion the cube breaks and the demon bursts forth into the souls of the Dr. Corvis and his young Daughter Bethany. The ancient theatre in the lonely winter mountains becomes an arena of spiritual war, between the darkest forces of the underworld and the cunning and esoteric mind of Scarlett Frost.
But Scarlett soon finds out that the only way to fight a demon this powerful is to become possessed by one herself. Only then can she acquire a ticket to the Theatre of the Absurd.

Genre(s)
Just your basic hidden object game where you’ll need to find different things in scenes that are way too cluttered to be considered healthy.
Theatre of the Absurd Review
I think I’ve pretty much covered everything in the negative portion of this review, but just to add to what I’ve already said–I don’t think there’s been another hidden object game (that I can remember) whose storyline I didn’t care to pay attention to. I think the reason for that is due to the game always telling me what to do, as well as the fact that I couldn’t take the voice actors seriously.
Plus, the hidden object scenes weren’t terribly great. Dare I say that piercing light on dark background started giving me a headache.
Makes things not as fun to deal with.
I did get the extra DLC portion of this game and it adds a really small amount after the ending.
The voice acting is even worse in the bonus content. The guy who’s speaking pauses intermittently in his speech like he forgot what he’s supposed to say for a moment…and it’s consistent. Not to mention that final puzzle was a pain in the ass, as well as his constant talking about what you’re supposed to do next in the alchemical area.
We have a sheet of paper on what to do. We don’t have to constantly have someone in our ears making us frustrated when we get something wrong.
If anything, this is a good HOG to show what not to do in a HOG.
