The Beast of White Orchard Guide
Ask the hunter where he found the bodies.
Fast travel to Woesong Bridge while you’re at the signpost of Nilfgaardian Garrison.
Go southwest to where the hunter’s located.
Use your Witcher Senses to find the hunter.
After you knock on the door and there’s no answer, Geralt will note that the hunter must be out doing what he does best–hunting. Use your Senses and you’ll see some red footprints that lead out into the forest via somewhat of a path. You’ll find the hunter eventually.
Speak with him and he’ll mention the wild dogs that are howling in the distance.
Kill the wild dogs.
Choose “why not” in order to help him dispatch the wild dogs. It’ll earn you a bit of extra XP to help out. Otherwise you can just stand back and have him do all the work, though it’ll take a bit longer.
Talk to the hunter.
He’s beside the dead body.
While talking to him, there’s multiple choices of responses you can give to him. In order to earn 350XP, you should listen to his sad tale. Which means you’d be choosing “before what?” as the first response. This will allow you to have the XP, without listening to the full story, but obviously if you want to hear the full story, choose “I’m a freak, too” as the next response.
Follow the hunter.
You’ll just need to follow after him to the site of the griffin’s attack.
Examine the site of the Nilfgaardian soldiers’ death using your Witcher Senses.
There are four different things you’ll want to interact with in this area, and that’s the following:
- Broken bottle
- Pool of blood
- Campfire
- Foot tracks
Follow the Nilfgaardian soldiers’ tracks using your Witcher Senses.
You’ll be hopping over a few areas and climbing upward until you reach the carcass of a female griffin.
Search the griffin’s nest using your Witcher Senses.
Three things you’ll be looking for:
- Dead soldier
- Pile of bones
- Griffin carcass
Go through the list of options when examining the griffin.
Ask the herbalist about buckthorn.
Make your way to the Broken Bridge signpost and fast travel to Sawmill.
As soon as you enter the building a cutscene will begin. Seems she’s trying to help heal a young woman, but she’s basically destined to die. If you choose the dialogue option “I could try to help her” you’ll get the quest On Death’s Bed.
Throughout the conversation, she’ll mention the buckthorn.
Find some buckthorn on the riverbed using your Witcher Senses.
At the river, you’ll need to dive underwater to retrieve the buckthorn in question.
Talk to Vesemir.
He’s standing outside the tavern you left him at. Mention the contract for the griffin. If you’ve got everything already, tell him you’re ready to set the trap.
You’ll acquire the item: Manuscript Page: Thunderbolt.
Meet Vesemir in the field where you plan to ambush the griffin.
Hop on your horse and speed off to the field to speak with Vesemir.
While you’re hiding in the bushes, you’ll obtain a Crossbow.
Kill the griffin.
You don’t have to use the crossbow if you don’t want to in order to kill the griffin. Dodge its aerial plummeting toward you and wait for it to land in order to dish out attacks if melee is your sole focus. Otherwise, you’ll need to choose the crossbow within your signs menu to use it.
After so many attacks, it will take off again into the distance.
Hop on your house and go after it, then attack until its dead.
Collect your reward from the Nilfgaardians.
Return to the garrison where a cutscene will happen when you walk through the doors.
Choose to accept the gold for less XP with a bonus of money, or deny the gold for more XP.
