Freedom Cry, give me freedom from games like these.

I think I just hit the bottom of the indie game genre and scooped up a bunch of sludge before it fell into the sewer pipe, then told myself, “This should be fun to play!” Except not that excitedly.

I’m sure it would be a good game to play if it didn’t start out with misspelled words, text that goes too fast for you to read, conversations full of thick accents that make it barely readable, events that make sense, and a way to get through it without game-breaking bugs blocking your way.

Seriously, RPGMaker games get a bad rap, and this should give you one reason why. Amateurs.

We all start somewhere, though, I get it. But if your game can’t even be played past the twenty-minute mark…stop.

Gameplay

While Steam’s big picture mode says Freedom Cry supports controllers, that’s a negative. It’s janky enough when you play it on the keyboard and mouse.

Honestly, that’s about all I have to say for gameplay, considering I’m unable to even play the game.

Are there achievements?

Yeah, but how you get them is beyond me.

Graphics

It’s your typical RPGMaker game that involves primarily pixel art sprites. There was nothing that really stood out in amazement to me. The intro screen (that you can’t skip, by the way, if you choose it) has drawn artwork, but…again it’s not anything special to look at.

Navigation

The navigation is super off in this game, and that’s pretty much why it kept freaking bugging out on me. The sprite your controlling doesn’t follow the path you’re going specifically. It’s a little off, and when that happens, you end up in a location you’re not supposed to stand in…which means you’re stuck.

And that’s just my problem.

People have had several accounts where they could go through solid objects and be in places they aren’t even meant to be in.

Also, stairs are funny. When they go left or right, it’s not a straight shot to either side. You have to move up, right, up, right, up, right (or the opposite way) in order to get to the top of a staircase.

What.

The.

Hell.
