The Sinking City 2 (Demo) Review

The Sinking City 2 (Demo) Review

The Sinking City 2, if at first you don’t succeed, try to sink the city a second time?

Set in the Roaring ’20s, The Sinking City 2 is a survival horror steeped in Lovecraftian dread. Defy an eldritch deity and explore the drowned alleys of Arkham, stalked by the dead, as you weigh one life against an entire city.

Explanation to Negative Feedback

No audio bug

After the first scene, the second scene didn’t have any kind of audio, and I was willing to let it slide until once out of the scene there was still no audio. Reloading a save file didn’t fix the issue. I had to exit out of the game entirely and boot it back up for the audio to start working again.

Which, aside from a slight dip in FPS on one portion of a scene, isn’t that bad for a demo where you might experience problems.

Questionable Slithers on corpses

When you kill one of the animated corpses, there’s typically going to be a bunch of Slithers around their body, and so it stands to question whether they will later reanimate the corpse, or if they’re just there to tell you you already got rid of this enemy.

It’s not really known.

I just stomped on the lot of them to make sure they were dealt with, in case they did reanimate the enemy.

But yeah. I’m not sure if that’s a possibility or not. Otherwise the whole stomp mechanic isn’t going to be widely used–at least not in the demo portion of the game.

Explanation to Positive Feedback

Map with icons

The Sinking City 2

You can find maps of the area on certain walls as you look around and explore, and when you check out the map in your menu, it will actually show important icons that you might otherwise forget.

Such as chests that you might’ve skipped by, locked chests, doors locked on the other side.

Highlighted words in reading material

The Sinking City 2

Sometimes when we’re reading we can glaze over what’s actually being said, and sometimes it’s just exposition what we’re reading. Basically, some things just don’t stick when they should. We’re gamers. We’re taking everything in. Important things are lost on us unless we get a little help every now and then.

As such, when we read certain texts, there are words and phrases that are highlighted to cast importance on them.

That way if we have to look back at something we read, we can get the gist of it quickly, rather than skimming the entire thing again.

Physical combat with shooting

I played on the normal setting. I had enough bullets to get me through the entirety of the demo without running out of ammo. But if you do find yourself out of ammo or running low, there’s the choice of shooting enemies as well as physical combat with punches and stomping.

I never tried it, because I’m afraid of getting close to those animated corpses, but I assume you can throw a punch, they’ll fall down, then you can stomp on them.

You can also dodge if they get too close.

So you’re not going to be fully reliant on ammo. You’re just probably going to always wish you had more, for emergency situations.

Shootable sores on bodies

The Sinking City 2

When you come across an animated corpse, they have these bulbous sores that appear on their body that you can shoot. For a normal playthrough setting, shooting these sores twice downed the normal Slither enemies.

I’m pretty sure shooting different areas other than the sores will cause you to use up more ammo before they die.

Which is unfortunate if you’re a bad shot.
