It’s been a while since I tried a lovecraftian game, and I’ve got a couple that I’ve got my eyes on, but this one stood out as a demo to me…seeing as it consisted of sexual content, I couldn’t resist. Cuthlhu and romance fit so well given that it’s all about the tentacles and crazy.
Who doesn’t love that as a combo?
Pros:
- Creepy ambiance
- Interesting interface
- Well-written story
Cons:
- Game ends after combat
- Sometimes text remains repetitive
- Have to go through everything again
When it came to the demo of the game, there really wasn’t anything in the way of combat, and I’m not even sure how the stats you choose at the beginning of the game really played a part. Like, yeah there were moments with occultism and investigation, but there were also moments where I came up against someone who was picking a fight.
In both of those fight moments, the game ended.
I don’t know if that’s just the way the demo is made, that once combat is initiated the demo is over…because there’s no “thanks for playing the demo” statement, so maybe the point of the demo is to avoid combat?
Which is really annoying because once it takes place you have to start the game from the beginning and just go through the same choices until there’s a possible different route you can take.
What I will say is some portions of the text really remind me of the docks we land at in the game Call of Cthulhu. And I know there’s no relation, but it’s really cool to kind of read text that might go along with a game, instead of playing a game in a character’s point of view.
It’s like going from watching a movie, to reading a novel of the same movie.
I do label this as a visual novel, because there are images on the left side of the screen and the ambiance fits in very well with the scene playing out before us. What’s interesting is that the further you get into the game, eyes start opening up and watching you along the interface around the text.
I suppose that’s your insanity gauge, as this is a lovecraftian game.
