Hidden Series Prologue, just when you thought it was easy, it turns on you.

I’ve been a bit on a “cute” kick when it comes to buying games from Steam, and this was one labeled as such. I don’t mind playing games suited for kids just as much as adults, and I’m obviously a fan of hidden object games, so I decided to go ahead and give it a try, since it’s just a prologue anyway.

Explanation to Negative Feedback

No zoom controls

I hate how a HOG starts zoomed in and while you’re able to both zoom in and out as need be, you can only do that with a mouse wheel instead of said buttons on the side of the screen or something.

Also, I don’t understand why some games won’t let you see the full picture in front of you. Instead, you’re forced to be in a zoomed in portion while you have to slide the image this way and that in order to find stuff. I don’t even care if the entire background wouldn’t fit to frame if you scaled all the way back. Just let me see the entire image!

Sketches don’t always look like the item

I preach about this below, but this game has both regular items in a picture and sketches scribbled into the picture that represent the items you need to find. I wouldn’t mind this…if those sketches would actually look like said items each time. Sometimes they don’t and it makes the struggle a lot less fun and more irritating.

Explanation to Positive Feedback

A certain degree of difficulty

It’s not always find the look-alike item in these scenes. Sometimes there will be sketches of those items and that gives the game a bit of a challenge that I can appreciate. No gamer likes things just handed to them, after all.

Cute scenes

You won’t often see me say things are cute, but I really like the background they placed together and the cartoon feel of all of them. Plus, keep in mind that most HOGs I play have scenes that are just a jumbled up, makes-no-sense mess where I have to find random crap in that doesn’t fit in with the game or picture at all. Thank god I found some normalcy here.

Short/long enough to capture attention

It’s short enough to be under 30 minutes if you’re a veteran and know what you’re looking for. Maybe it will take some kids longer to find stuff in some of the scenes, but for a prologue, it gives you just enough time and puzzles to either pique your interest or have you moving on to another.

Hidden Series Prologue Review

TL;DR Review

I’m not quite sure how I feel about this game, and it’s not because it’s pretty simplistic when you first start going through the levels of finding things, because I don’t mind playing kids games or adult games at this point. But when you go from having the actual item you need to find in the main background to having sketches of said items actually hidden in the image, there’s a bit of a problem.

It’s not consistent.

For three (I think) levels, back to back, they were your typical HOG scenes. But then it just switches to sketches of the items. No reason either, it just does. And some of those items are difficult to find, and one didn’t even look like the item in question.

It’s nice to give kids a challenge, but damn.

Luckily it’s just the prologue of the main game, so you can kind of get a feel for what you’re up against if you do plan on getting the main game. I don’t know if they’re going to switch it up randomly between actual items and sketches, or if they’re going to throw another curve-ball into the mix, but if they do plan on sticking to just these two styles, I think it’ll still be a good HOG for anyone who likes them or wants to try them.
