Explanation to Negative Feedback

Biyomon is male

Digimon Story Time Stranger

I know, I know, there was an episode with Renamon once saying that Digimon don’t adhere to specific gender roles, so it’d be perfectly normal for there to be a male Biyomon, but after being so used to her voice in the original series, it’s really jarring.

And not the kind of laughable jarring that you get when you realize the ladybug in A Bug’s Life is actually male, either.

This is more of a what-have-you-done jarring.

Explanation to Positive Feedback

Variety of Digimon evolutions

Digimon Story Time Stranger

At this point, maybe it’s not such a revelation that the game does this, because I’m pretty sure the last Digimon game I’ve played–which was Digimon World 3 back in 2002–I know, it’s been a while–had the ability to choose which digivolution you wanted based on stats.

I’m not sure if you got a silhouette outline in that game or not, but in this one, you don’t exactly see which Digimon you can digivolve to. Instead, you kind of have to be well-versed in what each Digimon look like, or take a chance on a Digimon that might look cool or have better stats than the rest.

I do like the idea that once you digivolve, you have the option of de-digivolving in order to evolve into another Digimon once you’ve leveled up more and acquired different stats.

This way you get to witness every Digimon you can and choose which benefits you more.

Personality types

Digimon Story Time Stranger

Sometimes you’ll be able to speak to your fellow Digimon that follows you around from your party setup and they’ll ask you a question. Depending on the answer you give them, they’ll start forming a personality type and different personality types can give them one perk or another in battle.

And personalities can change throughout the game, giving you the choice of changing the perk they’ve already claimed, or keeping it the same, which I really like.

Voice acting

The only non-voiced character, ironically, is you, but I’m pretty sure you had a voice during the initial start of the game, so I’m guessing your voice just isn’t completed during the demo phase.

Even if not, it’s fine.

It’s great that everyone else, except the general public, have voices to them, and you can auto-continue conversations. That way you can just chill while the characters figure out what’s going on and talk through their problems without you needing to click to confirm that they’ve spoken.

Battles are fun

This was going to be mandatory, given a lot of the focus of the game is going to be heading into battles.

Every time you encounter a specific Digimon in battle, they acquire a percentage that goes up past 100%, I believe. Once high enough, you can basically acquire said Digimon with better stats than if it were at a lower percentage.

Before battles you can equip your Digimon with certain abilities you might acquire, giving them more of an advantage in what spells they can dish out, but there is MP that’s being used with every ability, and that’s going to need to get replenished at times.

Your pretty basic stuff.

And as with all Digimon games, I’m going to assume, every Digimon attack is going to have a short sequence of them saying the ability name or otherwise just using their normal attack before it strikes the enemy.

In some games this can get annoying. Especially after seeing it over and over, but having chosen DemiDevimon as my initial starter, I kind of find him adorable to look at.

You also have the ability to use items and attack in the same instance, which is great. No more using an item then moving onto the next character in your line-up to attack.

And finally, speaking of line-ups, there is a battle bar that shows you the line-up of who’s going to be attacking next, so there’s no guesses as to who has more speed, when you’re going to have to prepare for an attack and all that.

It’s all there for you.

My Very First Battle is an unmissable storyline achievement.

After choosing one of three digimon (I went with DemiDevimon), you can confront your first enemy digimon. This achievement is obtained after completing that battle.

Signs of an Anomaly is an unmissable storyline achievement.

Near the beginning of the game, while in the tunnels, you’ll be faced with Metal Greymon, who will chase you. If you stop running, you will die and have to restart the super short chase sequence. Eventually, you’ll have to battle him with your digimon of choice and Omnimon.

It’s Omnimon that ultimately kills Metal Greymon, but you can get a couple hits in.

The Secrets of Conversion is an unmissable storyline achievement.

After fighting a digimon enough times, their scan rate will reach 200%, allowing you to materialize and recruit them onto your team. Koromon was the first for this to happen to.

Initial Digivolution is an unmissable storyline achievement.

Digivolution is part of the tutorial phase of the game, though it doesn’t go into it in a whole lot of detail before you do it, only after you’ve done it, which is a little weird.

I went ahead and chose to digivolve Punimon into what looked like the silhouette of the pre-evolution of Gatomon, since I like Gatomon and would like to obtain her eventually. Turns out I was right, though I’m a bit rusty on the silhouettes of a lot of the digimon this game has to offer.

Punimon digivolved to Nyaromon.

The Shinjuku Inferno is an unmissable storyline achievement.

You obtain it after you’ve defeated Kuwagamon and go through a cutscene near the end of the prologue section.

The Time Stranger is an unmissable storyline achievement.

This achievement happens after dealing with a scene regarding figuring out just what happened to you and where you are–which is a different time period.

Welcome to the In-Between Theater is an unmissable storyline achievement.

Once you’re able to wander around town after acquiring the appropriate coordinates for your partner, there’s a strange light you can come across, and once interacting, it’ll turn into a door, which then becomes the In-Between.
