Looking through the “cozy” games of January 2024–and I place “cozy” in quotes, because not all of the games listed have this tag in them (in fact the tag is quite rare when searched for on Steam)–have taught me a lesson regarding this specific genre.
I correlate the term “cozy” with “relaxing”, since in cozy games you’re not supposed to feel stressed out.
However, when going through the “relaxing” term on Steam, I’ve come to the conclusion that not all games that some people see as cozy are going to actually be cozy to me.
For instance, some of the games that I didn’t add to the list are the ones where you find hidden cats in an environment. Trying to find every single cat is stressful as shit to me, and I don’t know about you, but I can’t find a game where I’m frustrated with finding one last thing in a large environment very relaxing.
On another note, I don’t think games that have combat in them should be considered cozy…but Stardew Valley has combat in it and it’s a cozy game, as well as some other farming simulator games.
So the genre is pretty loose depending on your definition of it.
Since I crossed a lot of things out for the genre, there wasn’t as many games in the list as I thought there would be, but it’s all based on my opinion on what a cozy game might be for the vast majority, I guess.
