Boreas, not to be confused with the Aurora Borealis.

I was on a demo kick for a little bit due to the first Steam Next Fest of 2025, and this is one of the games that caught my attention. After having played Dredge I found out I quite like fishing on boats–though this a bit less dramatic than that game.

The demo for Boreas and every other video linked to it can be seen on our Patreon, and if you’re wanting to know what other games we’ve played and have posts for, here’s our list of current games.

Confusing tutorials

Boreas Review
Scales show nothing there

I don’t think you should leave it up to a seagull to tell you where to go and what to do on a ship, seeing as they see things a bit differently than humans do. It’s like Ariel in The Little Mermaid pointing out household items you need to set a table and giving them entirely different names.

But they did it to be a little funny and add some cuteness, I guess.

Despite the seagull portion, the tutorials overall are still confusing. Sometimes the game will tell you something when it hasn’t actually happened yet. Like, you’ve got a large catch on the rig and…you don’t. It’s empty.

Then when it comes to explaining other things, words just don’t really do them justice. I really think they should implement visual tutorials so people understand what they need to do better.

Basically, I had to figure things out on my own and ignore what the tutorials told me half the time because I didn’t understand them.

Inventory filled too easily

If you’re going full steam ahead, you’re going to accumulate a lot of items going from one island to another, and not every island is going to want what you’re carrying, which leads to a large supply of items that you can’t do anything with, so you just have to throw it in the furnace for fuel of the ship, which seems like a bit of a waste.

No way to sell off excess inventory

Going with the inventory is filled too easily, you can’t really sell anything you don’t want at this point.

Bear in mind this is a demo, so you could easily be able to sell things in the full game, but in the demo you have to just get rid of them via the furnace because they take up too much limited space otherwise.

Cute artwork

Boreas Review

I love how our main character looks, and how everything is drawn in a cute style. The fact that our character doesn’t have any eyes because his face is so hairy and he’s all nose made me laugh when I first saw him. That must be what you look like when you’re out in the sun all day on a trawler.

Ship keeps you pretty active

Boreas Review

You’ll be heading to several different islands in the demo and during that time you’ll be on the ship doing what you gotta do before reaching the destination.

Due to this being a demo, there’s not a whole lot you have to do as long as you know what you need to do, but between matching the direction of the wind, maintaining the furnace, and trawling different things from the sea in a timely fashion, there’s not a whole lot of downtime, which is a good thing.

Nobody wants to stand on a ship and be idle.
