Explanation to Negative Feedback
Plane ride might’ve been drawn out
I mean, I liked it, but just hovering up and down and going left and right while the story was being told was just taking too long for me. There’s only so much of switching directions and flying high or low that I want to do. I feel like I would’ve liked it a little bit more if we stuck with the characters as we were being told the story, while getting a smaller sequence of the plane acrobatics.
I get it, grandma likes to stretch out her stories, but the plane needs to land for gas.
We can be pushy at the end
Our character was a little annoying with some of those choices we could make when asking if Yiayia wanted to go on another walk again. Even when we know she doesn’t want to push herself like they, we’re like a little toddler begging please.
You clearly don’t have to choose the more pushy options, but still. Just having them there made me want to be like, dude. Stay in her comfort zone.
Explanation to Positive Feedback
A wholesome narrative
I went into this game expecting an emotional turn, as in, something bad was going to happy to granny. It was making me anxious every time she had to stop to rest, but it turns out nothing bad actually happens, and this is a game where we’re just walking around the block with our grandma to help boost up her confidence since she’s now got the walker.
It’s so clear that she’s anxious and unsure about taking a walk with us. You can practically hear the hesitation to her words, which just adds more depth to her character.
During the walk we share stories with one another, which brings us even closer to the characters.
Overall, we learn a bit more from grandma, and even ourselves as the main character walking with her.
Lovely graphics
The main portion of the game is pixel art, but there are other styles we get into throughout the game, including chalkboard drawings that are framed on a wall as Yiayia talks about her and Ruthie.
There’s a bit within the game where she talks about our grandpa and we get to control an older style of airplane. And then when they moved from Greece there’s a section with us controlling a boat, and both of these have somewhat of a realistic style in a slightly unrealistic way.
I don’t know how else to describe it.
But yes, the graphics are great, and it does switch between the graphics every once in a while when a story’s being told.
Mini adventures
These are moments where you get to take control of something that isn’t actually your character, because you’re being taken back to a moment that isn’t in the here and now. Such as with the airplane scene and the boat scene I mentioned, but there’s also a grasshopper you can control for a bit of easy platforming.
