I still have a ways to go with obtaining all the achievements for Ghostwire Tokyo, but I have beat the game and thoroughly enjoyed every moment the game had to offer. Except for maybe the Shine Dancers. I absolutely hate those Visitor encounters.
What I’m getting at here is that I’m more than happy knowing I have another reason to jump into this game once again.
And hopefully you are too.
So let’s check out what the update has in store for us, though know that there are also other things that I don’t really touch base on, but were also added. These things include achievements as well as new quests.
Ghostwire Tokyo Spider’s Thread Updates
New Content
- A challenging new roguelite mode, The Spider’s Thread, where players must fight floor-by-floor to reach the end, while uncovering a mysterious new story
This is an interesting mode that you can either breeze through, or hitch a ride on the struggle-bus because you’re trying to actually complete what the optional objectives want you to do. Which means with certain floors that battles occur, there may be an optional objective such as “don’t use any consumables”. You just happen to get more points by doing everything correctly and collecting all you can.
Not every floor is just one level.
Some floors have multiple levels, but at the end of the floor everything’s counted up for you and you’re ranked.
It’s fun, and it can be challenging.
- Haunting new areas to explore in the main game—including the eerie Middle School—and new missions to unravel
You can’t go wrong with new missions, and of course they’re going to add in a creepy kids school in a game plagued with ghosts. I guess it was missing that one little thing throughout the entire playthrough.
- New and expanded main story cutscenes
I always thought the cutscenes in this game were amazing, so I’m excited that they’ve been extended.
- Deeper combat: avoid enemy attacks with the new Quick Dodge and Perfect Block Counter-Attack; strike from above with new aerial abilities; master powerful new Charge Rush Ethereal Weaving techniques; and utilize new talismans to aid you in battle
Ghostwire Tokyo has become a blend of Assassin’s Creed apparently. Also a little bit of Overwatch.
With these first three abilities not-so-much, but with the upcoming ones I’ll mention, you’ll know what I mean.
Wind-Elemental Charge Rush allows you to shoot the wind element like little missiles. Kind of like firing a gun round after round until you run out of the charge. Water-Elemental Charge Rush can freeze an enemy, but they have to be close enough in the circle for it to be effective to them. Once they’re frozen they take more damage from a singular hit. With Fire-Elemental Charge Rush, your hands become a flamethrower and you can set enemies on fire.
Very cool hot.
The other abilities are pretty unique to the game.
Aerial Quick Purge grants you the ability to stealth kill from above. Much like you can do in the Assassin’s Creed’s games (as well as many other games, I’m sure). Ground Pound is more of a Doomfist move. By being in mid-air and dropping down, you can knock foes over, which might give you enough time to kill them if there’s more than one. Dodge is really nice for getting out of the way pretty quickly.
I know in combat I’ve sometimes had trouble just getting away from an attack, but with Dodge, it should be a lot easier.
A lot of interesting and fun abilities, for sure.
- New enemy Visitors to test your skills
Can’t wait to get my ass handed to me in even more ways now.
- Expanded Photo Mode: add stamps to your screenshots, and use Meika to unlock figures at capsule machines to add their models to use in Photo Mode
These are for those who enjoy taking screenshots throughout the game (and some of you do this way better than I ever could). I believe sometimes you can find graffiti throughout the game and find stamps from them? But there are little machine to place money into for figurines as well.
Quality of Life Improvements
- Players will now see an icon in the HUD displaying the type of food or drink they have equipped
Everyone enjoys aesthetics, and personally when it came to food and drinks, I never really knew which one I was consuming. I just needed one that filled my bar to a certain point so I wouldn’t die. And also, this means I never really paid attention to the stat boosts you could get from some of them.
With this update, when you grab a consumable, a small icon of the food/drink will appear after its name. Also, when you look in the lower right, there’s the icon of which one you currently have equipped.
This makes it so much easier to know what consumable you have at the ready. Especially since you’ll be used to seeing what they look like when you grab them.
And I’m a sucker for small art like this.
- A wish was added to shrine offering boxes to see a Hyakki Yako, which increases the chances of a player encountering one
You know, I never give shrines a whole lot of credit for anything when I happen to go to one. I know they help out, but it’s kind of like, all right I went to a shrine and chose something, now back to the game. I knew it would eventually help at some point, especially with finding jizo statues, but it wasn’t something I became focused on after using it.
If you remember, the Hyakki Yako is also known as the Ghost Parade. And if you love battles, then you might want to encounter them more often–and with this wish you can!
I personally only enjoy the Ghost Parade because all the Visitors in the nearby area suddenly vanish.
- Changed some key binding settings to be individually assignable
I don’t typically change keybinds unless I’m playing on mouse and keyboard, but in the menu you can change the keybinds to both m&k as well as controller–in case you’re used to pressing a specific button to do a certain thing that Ghost Tokyo switches up.
I know this will please a variety of players.
- Players can now toggle a darker background onto subtitles and mission objective text for enhanced readability.
It sucks when there are subtitles and you can’t read them because they blend too well with certain backgrounds of the game. I like the darker background aesthetic to make the text stand out more. I’m pretty sure there are other games than can enhance a stroke thickness to the words? But hey, dark backgrounds work as well.
