Hello everyone and welcome to another
0:03
episode of Not Now Nail Mom. I'm gaming.
0:24
My name is Kay and on this episode we'll
0:26
be doing a gameplay review of Date with
0:28
Fox Girl which has a base game that is
0:31
safer work and a DLC you can download if
0:34
you want the adult portions. I want you
0:36
to know that this game's alltime peak
0:38
players is at six and the reviews are
0:41
mostly positive. For me, the base game
0:44
was a negative. However, combine it with
0:47
the DLC and it gets a little bit better
0:50
if only because you don't have to read
0:51
any more of the story line. It's all
0:54
animation and sounds at that point and
0:56
something most people are after when
0:58
they purchase games from the Honey Bunny
0:59
devs. It's short, has puzzles that get
1:02
moderately more difficult the further
1:04
you progress, and then ends with the
1:06
DLC's bang.
1:08
The blurb for this game states, "Have
1:11
you ever wondered why you don't have a
1:12
girlfriend? Or have you ever wondered if
1:13
you will ever find a girlfriend?
1:15
Sometimes it doesn't take much to meet a
1:17
beautiful foxy girl. just go to a cafe
1:20
for coffee and time and have a little
1:22
perseverance and desire.
1:25
As you might notice by now, I have set
1:26
up subtitles and I think I might be
1:28
doing this for my podcast episodes from
1:30
this point forward just to help everyone
1:32
out that can't hear very well, but would
1:34
like to enjoy what I'm saying in regards
1:36
to all these weird games I play. Here's
1:40
hoping it helps you along. Now, let's
1:42
get into the review. As with most of
1:45
these games, especially those from the
1:48
game dev's Honey Bunny Studio, there's a
1:51
short intro scene before the game
1:52
starts.
1:56
[Music]
2:19
I think this is not only to provide a
2:21
little jingle for you when you first
2:23
boot up the game, but also because
2:25
there's no actual title screen to these
2:27
games. It clearly doesn't throw you into
2:30
the game, but there's no title screen in
2:32
the sense that there's a title with a
2:34
new game and settings choice.
2:37
The settings and gallery options are in
2:39
the top right. The settings having only
2:41
an option for sound effects and music.
2:44
And it's a little unclear because one
2:46
symbol is a volume icon while the other
2:48
icon is a musical note. Two different
2:51
sounds, but they could have made it a
2:52
little more obvious which does what.
2:55
Also, you can choose the arrows beside
2:57
the flag to change the language and then
2:59
choose windowed mode or full screen with
3:02
a button on the bottom. That one is
3:04
actually fairly hard to see.
3:07
Now, the scenes you can choose from have
3:09
an image of the character all in a row
3:11
with different outfits and slightly
3:13
different poses, I guess, but you can't
3:15
bypass the order. You have to start from
3:18
the one on the left and move forward to
3:20
the right. However, if you wanted to
3:23
look further on at the images, there are
3:25
these small arrows at the top to move to
3:27
the scenes you can't currently see.
3:31
Oh, and if you think you can bypass
3:33
everything and go straight into the
3:35
gallery, think again. You'll only see
3:37
the images you've done or are on.
3:40
Meaning, if you first boot up the game
3:42
and go into the gallery, you'll only see
3:44
the still image from the first scene.
3:47
When you choose the first scene, there's
3:48
a scene transition that's different with
3:50
each game as far as graphics go, but the
3:52
same concept. This scene transition
3:55
involves Japanese sliding doors with
3:57
watercolor, I think, images of cherry
4:00
blossoms and a kitsune in the center. I
4:03
really like the kitsune. It's quite
4:05
cute. So, once you're in the first
4:08
scene, there is a puzzle to do. This is
4:11
a very simplistic puzzle. For the first
4:15
scene, you basically have two loops that
4:18
you have to connect correctly. So, a
4:22
cyan loop and then a red loop.
4:25
And just move the hexagonal shapes to
4:28
where you think they need to go until
4:30
the image is complete. I find that these
4:33
puzzles are a lot better for me
4:36
specifically
4:38
than the, you know, six piece puzzles
4:41
where you just, you know, where each one
4:43
goes.
4:45
And it's just putting it there to act
4:48
like a game. To act like you're doing
4:51
something productive
4:54
when really you're not. Once the first
4:57
puzzle is completed, you get the
4:58
achievement big blue eyes.
5:01
And every achievement in this game can
5:03
be obtained just through completing
5:06
every single scenes puzzles.
5:10
The base game only has six scenes to it.
5:14
The not safe for work DLC adds another
5:18
six scenes. So if you get the base game,
5:21
you're not going to be able to complete
5:23
all the achievements until you download
5:25
the not safe for work DLC and complete
5:28
that.
5:30
So now we can see what the uh scene we
5:33
have here is she works in the cafe, Box
5:36
Bell Cafe.
5:38
Her name is Mo
5:41
and a boy named Quichi enters the cafe.
5:44
So, she starts serving him and then they
5:46
kind of hit it off. You know, the visual
5:49
novel aspect of this game, the actual
5:52
story, it's it's garbage. It sucks. I
5:57
don't think I can even blame it on the
6:00
translation being bad. I think just the
6:03
writing in general is bad because
6:06
everything seems repeated.
6:08
You got Corgi saying, "Good afternoon,
6:11
lovely fox. What would you recommend
6:12
from the menu?" And she responds, "Good
6:15
afternoon. I would recommend our gourmet
6:17
desserts." And it's it's kind of a
6:19
repetition
6:21
constant.
6:23
That's not even the worst part of it.
6:25
This is just the first scene. So, Miko
6:28
asks, "Do you come here often?" And
6:30
Quichi says, "Well, not very often, but
6:33
I would love to come here again if you
6:34
let me.
6:39
It's a coffee shop. Like, you're you're
6:43
a customer. Come in whenever you want
6:47
as long as you're buying something." So,
6:50
Miku says, "Of course. I'm happy to
6:52
welcome our regular guests here." And Ki
6:54
asks, "May I ask for your phone number
6:57
to contact you if I want to come here
6:59
again?
7:00
What? Why? Why do you need her phone
7:03
number? And she didn't even give him her
7:06
phone's number. She gave him the office
7:10
the this place's phone number.
7:14
So if he wants to come here again, he's
7:16
going to call in, be like, "Can I come
7:18
in?" Like this writing, the story so
7:23
far. I just have you know as I'm talking
7:26
through this review, I have a migraine
7:28
and it's only going to get worse. Like
7:30
I've already played through this game.
7:33
I'm just going over the gameplay I've
7:35
done the recording
7:37
and talking about it and it's like I'm
7:40
already frustrated
7:42
and I can't even say that this is the
7:44
worst visual novel game I've played cuz
7:47
it's not.
7:49
But this sort of sets up the scene for
7:52
kind of coming together for their first
7:54
date. So customer and server see each
7:57
other, they have a nice little chat,
7:59
they exchange, they don't even exchange
8:01
phone numbers. He just gets her work's
8:05
phone number and then he'll come around
8:07
again to see her. And if you haven't
8:10
noticed already,
8:12
there are icons for when one of them
8:15
speaks, both Miko and Qui. And it's just
8:20
a generic fox face emoji and a generic
8:25
person face, I guess, boy face emoji.
8:29
They couldn't have put more effort into
8:31
that.
8:33
They just Googled some images of a fox
8:36
face and a guy's face and slapped it on
8:39
there. I mean, we know who's talking.
8:42
So, instead of a large name plate being
8:46
on top of the text box or something like
8:48
that, we get a face of either a fox or a
8:52
guy. The background's
8:55
really good.
8:57
I think the fox girls decent. I mean,
9:01
she looks pretty good. Kind of droopy
9:04
ears. Maybe she's just like kind of
9:06
being shy with them.
9:08
What I don't like is the tail.
9:12
Like the tail in all of these scenes, it
9:14
just looks like the girl is an AI model
9:17
and they had an artist come in and draw
9:20
in the tail afterwards.
9:22
It just doesn't match the style.
9:25
Completely different art style from the
9:28
fox girl model. Plus, in this scene, it
9:31
doesn't even look like it's connected to
9:33
her back end. It's like it's coming out
9:34
of her side. I don't think that's how
9:37
tails work. could be wrong. I don't
9:40
personally own a tail, so I'm just
9:42
saying. As far as the movements of the
9:46
character, I don't mind it. I feel like
9:48
a little bit of movement is always
9:50
better than having a still image, but
9:52
still images are fine as well. It's just
9:56
moving images seem to make things a bit
9:58
more active in the scenario.
10:01
The music is also pretty good for this
10:03
scene.
10:06
[Music]
10:15
[Music]
10:22
kind of background sounds as if it was a
10:24
cafe and then some musical soundtrack
10:27
with it. So, not bad in that regard. Bad
10:30
writing, bad emojis,
10:32
bad tail. The rest pretty darn good so
10:36
far. Our next scene starts with a puzzle
10:39
that's a little bit bigger than the
10:41
first one. This one having three loops
10:44
to match up instead of two. It's still
10:47
fairly easy in the sense that you just
10:49
have to match up the end loops on the
10:50
ends of the puzzles at the right place.
10:54
The next bit is a little confusing.
10:56
Miku has finished her work already. It's
10:59
stated that she has by the line after
11:01
finishing work. But when she leaves the
11:03
cafe and sees Kochi waiting for her by
11:06
the entrance, which is weird in itself,
11:08
how long has he been standing there? He
11:11
asks her if she'd like to go on a walk
11:13
with him. I'm trying not to put him in
11:15
the red flag category here, but it's
11:17
difficult.
11:19
I get it. Some people are just lonely,
11:21
but don't seek the company of others
11:23
like this.
11:25
Anyway, Miko states that she has to
11:27
finish up her work now, which might take
11:29
around an hour. Now, my brain is
11:32
thinking she's going to wait an hour
11:33
inside the cafe in hopes that he's going
11:35
to wander off and go stalk someone else.
11:38
But he doesn't. Here's where you see a
11:40
good example of the repetition I was
11:42
talking about. Ci, do you want to go for
11:45
a walk with me? I know a great place
11:47
where we can go for a walk. He's really
11:51
shoving his eagerness to the forefront,
11:53
isn't he?
11:54
Oh, before we head to the park for a
11:56
little walk, she did do an outfit
11:58
change. And each scene does give her a
12:00
different outfit. I think her outfit
12:02
looks pretty nice here. Cute, but
12:05
reserved, I'd say. At least her tail is
12:08
coming out from behind and not her side
12:09
this time. Honestly, I don't really know
12:12
what to say about most outfits. I'm just
12:15
a casual t-shirt and jeans person. I'm
12:17
not in the no for styles. Our next
12:20
puzzle features three rings, and I don't
12:22
think it's bigger than the last one we
12:23
did, just a different layout change. I
12:26
will say at this point, it kind of sucks
12:28
that the puzzle itself blocks the fox
12:30
girl, even though you see her when it's
12:32
complete anyway. And it's not like it
12:34
hides anything from you specifically.
12:36
It's just a personal annoyance.
12:39
Ci states, "He's happy we agreed to go
12:41
out with him." And that's a double-edged
12:43
statement because we went out with him
12:44
for a walk in the park. But I'm thinking
12:47
his mind is thinking we're actually
12:48
going out with him right now. Plus, it's
12:52
not like he gave us much of a choice.
12:54
And Miku isn't one to seem rude and
12:56
brush someone off.
12:58
He then thanks us once again for
13:00
agreeing to go out with him, as if we
13:02
already forgot that he's happy about it.
13:04
Or maybe he's hammering the point home
13:05
that this is a date to him and doesn't
13:07
want us to miss that clearly bold and
13:09
underlined point. He asks us if we can
13:12
go to the park, and it's a place he said
13:15
he wanted to take us in the first place,
13:17
so why ask again?
13:19
Also, I love the background here. We're
13:22
not technically in a park yet, but we're
13:24
in an area where Sakura trees are
13:26
clearly in full bloom. She looks nice
13:28
here, sitting amongst all of them. Corgi
13:31
wants us to hold hands before we set off
13:33
for the park, so people who see us
13:35
together know we're together and all
13:37
that.
13:39
The next puzzle is bigger and might take
13:40
a bit more time to figure out, but hey,
13:43
you should know how to connect the loops
13:44
at a decent rate right about now.
13:47
This is a scene that I don't like. I
13:49
think it's the only scene that I don't
13:51
really enjoy being in just because going
13:53
from the last scene with all the secur
13:55
trees and then this one makes the entire
13:57
environment look fake. I don't like the
14:00
grass. I don't like the trees. The only
14:02
thing good in the scene is our fox girl
14:04
dressed in a kimono and maybe the picnic
14:06
supplies all laid out, but you can't
14:08
really look at that anyway. Cory T is
14:11
just the sweetest man by giving us
14:12
sandwiches and sweets to eat. Despite us
14:15
being thirsty for his attention, he
14:17
doesn't offer us a drink.
14:19
The next puzzle is larger and adds in a
14:21
fourth ring. This one is a light orange
14:23
that might blend in a little too well
14:25
with the background depending on
14:26
someone's color blindness. I think I'm
14:29
not sure why they didn't go for a color
14:31
that was more noticeable because even I
14:33
had problems remembering there was an
14:35
orange ring on an orange background.
14:39
Speaking us being thirsty before we
14:41
finally got our drinks in hand. And I
14:44
don't know where this place is and Miku
14:46
states is her favorite place. I mean all
14:48
we're getting from the background is
14:50
outside two buildings. One would think
14:52
it has something to do with the drinks
14:54
in hand, but maybe not. A little
14:56
clarification of where we are would be
14:58
great.
15:00
The both of us start to get a little too
15:01
mushy for my liking, like someone making
15:04
kissy faces at you and clinging onto
15:06
your arm. I'm just not one of those
15:08
girls. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind
15:10
PD in general, but watching people
15:12
obsess over each other makes me cringe.
15:16
That combined with this writing really
15:18
makes me cringe. Ki is wonderful and
15:22
we're glad to be here with them wherever
15:24
here is. and he states the same. Then he
15:27
asks, "Would you like to drink something
15:29
delicious from my bottle?" Boy, my
15:32
eyebrows raise as boldness on that one.
15:35
I know nobody's around. There's alcohol,
15:37
but simmer down, my guy. Just kidding,
15:39
you filthy minded folk. He's got
15:41
Japanese green tea.
15:44
So, they both share a drink and talk
15:45
about seeing each other again once the
15:47
day's ended and our date has come to its
15:48
conclusion.
15:50
In the next scene, our conclusion ends
15:52
with us sharing our next encounter with
15:53
Kochi in a bedroom. I mean, the main
15:56
game features six scenes, and this is
15:58
our sixth, which means the next comes
16:00
with the not safe for work DLC, so you
16:03
know what's going to happen next. But
16:06
that's the upcoming portion. Let's stick
16:08
to the here and now. This puzzle here is
16:11
the biggest yet, and it's blocking her
16:13
body enough that it almost makes you
16:14
want to believe it's hiding something,
16:16
but trust me, it isn't. This portion of
16:18
the game is familyfriendly. Just two
16:20
people finding enjoyment in each other's
16:22
presence and going on a date that
16:24
miraculously sealed their love for each
16:25
other.
16:27
We're so glad he came to our house. But
16:29
really, was she expecting him to say no
16:31
at this point? And then she mentions her
16:34
garden and it's him with his delicious
16:36
bottle all over again. He'd really like
16:38
to see it, just like she really wanted
16:40
to taste that Japanese green tea of his.
16:43
This ending scene seems a bit shorter
16:45
than the other ones we went through, but
16:47
it's also a very sweet moment to end on
16:50
with her leaning her head on him and him
16:51
hugging her. The both of them looking
16:53
out the window.
16:55
After this, the game takes you back to
16:57
the scene selection screen. And if you
16:59
go further to the right, those are
17:00
blocked with Miku's fox emoji face,
17:04
which means this ends the safer work
17:07
portion of this podcast episode.
17:10
But for all you patrons of mine, let's
17:12
not let this stop us. Well, I hope
17:15
you've enjoyed this podcast review of
17:16
the game Date with Fox Girl. I wouldn't
17:19
recommend the base game by itself to
17:21
anyone, but combining it with the Not
17:24
Safe Work DLC makes it a little more
17:26
tolerable, seeing as you might actually
17:28
be getting something out of it in the
17:30
end. The base game is just so bad with
17:32
its writing. Wholesome, but bad.
17:36
Hopefully, you enjoy the subtitles of
17:38
this podcast episode. I'm very aware
17:40
some people have hearing problems and I
17:42
don't always annunciate my words when I
17:44
talk fast. Plus, I'm not actually
17:46
reading what's on the screen, so the
17:47
subtitles are helpful in that regard.
17:50
But hey, maybe people would appreciate
17:52
this on videos where I do commentaries
17:54
as well. Not sure. In any case, I
17:57
appreciate you sticking around for this
17:59
podcast episode. And try not to get in
18:01
too much trouble when you're having
18:03
bonding time with someone and have to
18:05
say, "Not now, Mom. I'm gaming.
