Nanotale – Typing Chronicles, type your way past monsters and save the trees!

As of playing this game and reviewing it, Nanotale – Typing Chronicles is in early access. Don’t let that deter you though. (Unless you don’t like early access games. Then by all means wait it out.)

Fishing Cactus developed the game, as well as its earlier typing game, Epistory, which I first played before this one.

Gameplay

I jumped right into this game thinking it’d be like Epistory, but that’s not exactly the case. Also with it being early access I can’t say what it’s going to progress on, but I will say that instead of elements to work in your favor (like in Epistory), you’ve got spells you can type before typing the enemy’s word.

Just to help with combat.

And to get through the environment.

In this one you actually get movement in the battles, but I felt like the areas where the larger battles were being set up weren’t as obvious. Like, I ran into an area and boom, finger flex, because shit just got real. It doesn’t seem like you go up to anything in general that signifies an incoming battle.

The battles can be a bit intense, but aren’t as hectic given some of the talents you can choose from.

Are there achievements?

Currently, no.

Graphics

The graphics are a bit different.

I felt a tug of nostalgia for Telltale game series, and possibly Borderlands with the style they went for. I’m not too sure about it, honestly. It’s certainly not a bad look, but does it fit in with the overall world is what I’m still debating.

As far as things lighting up and different animations of your spells, everything looks well put together.

Navigation

This one’s a bit of a doozy.

You’ve got a bit of a large land to work with, and you can uncover a lot of it fairly quickly. In turn, when looking at the map, it starts to be a bit overwhelming on where exactly you need to go and how to even get there. Plus there’s the back-tracking aspect with some of the quests if you go a little too far forward in your quest to decimate the monsters and examine plant life.

Narrative

There is no narrative to the game at the moment, but I’m sure that might change with the finished product.

Soundtrack

I didn’t really even hear much when it came to the soundtrack either. Granted, it’s not completely silent, but there was definitely more going on background music-wise when fights were going down, rather than when you were running about the open world.

Final Thoughts

I certainly can see potential with the game while it’s in early access.I know there were some odd moments where I wasn’t really able to finish a quest with the sheep, due to them all fighting for a space in the flower bed, and other times where I just didn’t bother with the quests, but given enough time and less areas to adventure it, it can be smoothed out.
