Half-Life: Alyx, virtual reality never looked so horrifyingly real.

My Thoughts

Holy. Crap.

Valve has done it. They’ve made one beastly, amazing looking VR game–the best looking as of now. That means these games can only get better from here.

One thing you want to do in this game is interact with everything. It’s super cool how they made certain things interact-able (like the start of the game with the cat on the balcony a little over from yours). The only reason I say that is because ChristopherOdd threw a bottle at it as a test (I know, poor cat).

Anyway, Half-Life: Alyx centralizes itself on being more of a cautious exploratory game for new players, but also a psychological horror.

I could also say it’s an action-based shooter game, but unless you’re really high-tailing it through, the action-packed content sort of gets lost. (Not that there aren’t bursts of moments where action gets intense, but they seem pretty sporadic.) Basically, you roam around a lot, in order to find odds and ends in secret little places.

But the sound effects and the dark places you go through–that’s where the game really shines. The reality of the situation you’re in, even if it’s a video game, can mentally stress you out, because you never really know what’s about to happen around the corner, right?

I suppose you could say it’s one of the best feelings a horror game could give you.

Let’s not forget, if you own a Valve Index headset or controller, you’ll get Half-Life: Alyx free, along with any additional content it comes with.

Characters

  • Alyx is the main character you’ll play as. She’s voiced by Ozioma Akhaga, who isn’t the original voice actor from prior Half-Life games.
  • Dr. Eli Vance is your father, who you kind of have to find before the Combine find out who he is and kills him. He’s voiced by James Moses Black, again, not the original voice actor from the other games.
  • Russel helps you throughout your journey, and he’s known for being the comic relief. He’s voiced by Rhys Darby.
  • Vortigaunts is something you meet who predicts Eli Vance’s impending demise. He’s voiced by Tony Todd.
